When Bernardine Kennedy aka Marie Maxwell ran away...

Here's Bernardine's story...

Ah, that old favourite, RUNNING AWAY.

How many times have I fantasised about running away over the years?  Quite often during certain times in my life.
I’d raid my ‘running away fund’ (not that I had one), I’d fly to New York with a backpack of essentials then criss-cross America on a Greyhound bus. I’d go to Los Angeles and Hollywood, to Las Vegas, to Chicago, in fact to all the names I’d heard of in films and books. I’d stay in romantic motels, eat in desert burger joints and drink root beer with cowboys. Oh yes, I’d done my research!
My other fantasy was pure Mills and Boon, it was fabulous. Because I didn’t have a ‘running away fund’ I’d get a job as nanny to a rock-star in Hollywood and live the life in Bel-Air with beach parties in Santa Monica and holidays in Hawaii.
It was a nice thought in the middle of the night but of course I never did it. The fantasy was always great but I wasn’t a runner.
Except for once.
I was brought up in Singapore and went to school at the convent there. (the convent that is now CHIJMES for anyone who knows Singapore). It was a multi-nationality school, I was the only European girl in my class, and a very competitive environment, very ‘Tiger-Mother’.  Slowly but surely my mother had become equally Tiger competitive, but I hadn’t. Not at all. I was a dreamer and not in the least academically motivated. I wanted to read Enid Blyton and daydream about adventures, I wanted to swim and dance and collect stray kittens; I didn’t want to study.
It was when I was about ten that I got a really rubbish school report. I wasn’t meant to open it but I did and when I saw that I was fourth from bottom of the class, with a selection of E marks, I just knew I was going to be in Really Big Trouble.  So I changed the E- marks to B+ marks and gave it to my mother to sign for me to take back the next day. Sadly the apprentice Tiger Mother decided that B grades weren’t good enough, only A’s would suffice and she was going to see Mother Superior about it the Very Next Day. How dare they?
I was awake all night envisioning the moment when my mother berated Mother Superior for only awarding me B grades and the nun then produced the Real Grades and they both realised I had cheated quite spectacularly.
I was scared witless and the only way out I could see was to Run Away.
We lived in an area of houses with large gardens which were surrounded by long grass (Lalang) and trees and I had this idea in my head that if I could find somewhere to lay low for a few days it would all blow over and I’d be okay to go back. Just a few days.
The house Bernardine was living in at the time

To say I wasn’t streetwise was an understatement, I had never been anywhere or done anything on my own, I hadn’t even been on public transport, but it didn’t stop me; I was so scared about the outcome of the meeting.  The shame of it.
So I took my nightie, (first clue to daftness), a book on ballet, a sandwich and a glass bottle of water that was in the fridge, put them in my schoolbag and ran for it first thing the next morning. Off I went across the lawn and out through the lalang to a hidden copse-like area. I ate the sandwich, drank the water and tried to read the book. (I can picture the cover but can’t remember the name)
I lasted until the afternoon ignoring the calling until I heard my father’s voice….. ‘Bernardine, I know you’re out there. If you don’t come back we’ll have to call the police.. You’re not in any trouble and there are snakes……’
Ah! I hadn’t thought of snakes, suddenly I could feel them everywhere so I jumped up and ran straight back. The bit about the snakes may have been true but the ‘not in trouble’ bit wasn’t, not when my mother got me and dragged me off to school. She went crackers and Mother Superior was ‘disappointed’; I was given two weeks after-school detentions to pick up my grades and banned from the Swimming Club and dancing school indefinitely. But even that didn’t seem as bad as the thought of snakes creeping up on me in the lalang.
Why had I not even thought of that before I took off? Why didn’t I think of it when I was racing through the lalang? J An innocent in the long grass!
Luckily my father, as always, fought my corner and eventually everything went back to normal although I don’t think my mother ever really got over it. She lived to the age of 95 still mentioning my ‘cheating’ and the ‘shame’ every so often!
Safe to say I never actually ran away again and nowadays I don’t even want to, however I do still take a book everywhere!

Here's Bernardine/Marie's latest book Gracie and you can get it here.

'She made the ultimate sacrifice... but can she now move on with her life?
Can she ever escape her past?

Writing Meme

Callytagged me on this writing meme in the week. It was funny but when I was reading hers I was feeling how useful it would be to look more closely at how I write. I felt it might help me identify some strength's and possible weaknesses therefore I was pleased to see my name at the bottom. Thanks Cally I have enjoyed yours and the the others I have read this week.

1. Do you outline?

No, I mind map my ideas on the story and on each character. At the beginning I find an outline too structured but now am looking at doing it once the first draft is complete so I have a handle on what I have written.

2. Do you write straight through a book, or do you sometimes tackle the scenes out of order?

I write straight through. Although I always know the end of my books I haven't a clue what will happen on the way there so I need to write in a linear fashion otherwise my brain would become more addled. If by some chance I think of an idea ahead I jot it down in my journal of add it to the mind map

3. Do you prefer writing with a pen or using a computer?

Computer. I gave up long hand in university although I keep a journal with all my scratching in it which I love. It's one of those moleskin ones.

4. Do you prefer writing in first person or third?

I have always written in third but I am toying with the idea of first for the next idea bubbling.

5. Do you listen to music while you write?

Occasionally classic but generally not as I find I become lost in the music too easily. How ever I can listen when I am revising???? Go figure that one. Maybe it helps my embarrassment when I read my work aloud to have other noises nearby????

6. How do you come up with the perfect names for your characters?

My main main characters seem to be born in my mind with names already. That is first names. last names came be more problematic. For secondary characters - it can be as scientific as whose name I see in the paper that morning.

7. When you're writing, do you ever imagine your book as a television show or movie?

Absolutely. When I write the whole thing plays in front of my eyes. i don't see the screen or the keyboard but the scene I am writing. It is all very visual for me.

8. Have you ever had a character insist on doing something you really didn't want him/her to do?

Yes and always with interesting results. At first I used to fight this and now I let it run and see where it leads me. I can always change it later!

9. Do you know how a book is going to end when you start it?

You bet. I write woman's fiction and I'm an optimist so there will be some sort of happy ending. it's just the bits that get to me to that ending that I often haven't a clue about!

10. Where do you write?

Currently the dinning room table. It really doesn't matter to me. I just bring chaos with me where ever I write.

11. What do you do when you get writer's block?

When my subconscious hasn't caught up with where I am in the story is when it hits so I need a little down time to walk or drive or read.

12. What size increments do you write in (either in terms of word count, or as a percentage of the book as a whole)?

At the beginning of the book about 1000 words a day but as I progress into the book that increases to 2000/3000 because I have a clearer idea where the story is taking me.

13. How many different drafts did you write for your last project?

Well, we all know I just finished draft one of A Cornish House and I am on draft 5 of August Rock so I think the answer is as many as it takes to get the damn thing right!

14. Have you ever changed a character's name midway through a draft?

Yes many times. While writing August Rock I had to change Judith's last name to Chambers because the previous incarnation was to close to someone famous. Hint, google the name before you become to deep in the story. I also have to change Tristan's last name because there was another house with the same name in the area that I am writing about. Secondary character's name get chopped and changed frequently with me!

15. Do you let anyone read your book while you're working on it, or do you wait until you've completed a draft before letting someone else see it?

Yes. Some times its good to have some feedback at the beginning.......

16. What do you do to celebrate when you finish a draft?

A bottle of bubbly, a long hot bath with a good book. I don't read much when I am writing the first draft.

17. One project at a time, or multiple projects at once?

One at a time. I rely on my journal to capture the ideas for the others while I focus on one.

18. Do your books grow or shrink in revision?

Good question. If I am doing a Sol Stein revision they shrink but having done that a few times now my writing has become stronger. However since plot is my weakness my books are now growing with revision as I add in more complications.

19. Do you have any writing or critique partners?

No. I tried but I just couldn't be critical enough of someone else's work. I'm too nice by nature.

20. Do you prefer drafting or revising?

Both. Hah, I never thought I would say this. I love the rush of the first draft but I'm learning to love seeing that become something better and stronger! I'm mad I know!

Now I need to tagged five other people for this meme...... so I tag (you are free to ignore me!) Fiona Harper, Julie Cohen, Bernardine Kennedy, Therese Fowler and b. e. sanderson . If you are in the UK , Julie's Little Black Dress book Spirit Willing Flesh Weak is being given away today free in the SUN newspaper! I read it last year and loved it so go get your free copy.......

Savoy 2

Well, still tired but now sitting here realizing I need to get out more!!! I met the wonderful fellow Novel Racer Bernardine Kennedy there. While chatting with her someone came up and introduced Bernardine to a striking blond woman in a fabulous dress. She said her name and I didn't catch it but smiled and spoke to her about her dress. It was from Biba and it wasn't expensive......the conversation went on. The drees was deep gold run through with metallic. it was fabulous but she had just the perfect figure to wear and the outfit was finished off to to die for brown high boots. She said if you couldn't dress up for the Romanic Novelist Lunch then when could you. How true.........

Now until an hour ago I had forgotten about this encounter. Then I received an email from the wonderful Bernardine talking about her Savoy experience. She spoke of how kind it was that her ex-editor introduced her to Amanda Ross (Amanda Ross) ........of the Richard and Judy book club fame........the most powerful women in publishing. I met her clueless and wittered on about her fabulous dress. I may never ever been lucky enough to meet her......lost opportunities???? Well, as I don't have a book in print probably not.

However if my fabulous Have You Seen Adam badge had arrived sooner I could have promoted that In Search of Adam (Thank you wonderful Caroline)............I have worm my badge proudly today looking for Adam at the plumbers merchant on Munster Road and to the Fulham Mitre for lunch.........

So hence the ghastly picture of a worn and tired me........... but proudly wearing my badge which I trying to keep away from my dd.

More on the Savoy later but had to share my utter dismay with my own lack of knowledge!!!
