Book Covers

There has been a bit of discussion recently about the importance of book covers. Over on Rebecca Burgess's blog she has a fantastic interview with the designer who did her book cover. I found it enlightening. I know in the world of books writers generally had little input into their covers unless of course you are a best seller then might just listen. However their importance goes without saying.

I found the covers of both Lesley Cookman's books spot on. I have just finished reading Murder at the Laurels. Again I loved and enjoyed being away from my 'normal' book choice. As I mentioned in the past, crime is not my thing but I love Lesley's books. As in the previous books Lesley's style of cosy crime invites you in and her writing is very immediate. In all the travelling I have been doing, I could just dip in and become immersed in a small town in Kent and feel such a part of it.

Some book covers can be so disappointing I find - and misleading. I've just started Arthur and George (Julian Barnes) which has a pretty boring cover. Perhaps it's a boring book....!

It's so hard to tell a book by the cover these days.........

Book covers are so important aren't they. I will go into Waterstones just to look at them and stroke them (sad-o I know).
I think I would find it very hard to have no input on the cover of my book (if I should ever be so lucky).

Will take a look at that author. Sometimes I fancy a good thriller but don't really know where to look.

Brilliant! I'm looking for a crime book - I don't really read them but fancy giving them a try...

And I agree, book covers are so important. I sometimes do choose a book by its cover!! x

lane and Sally, lesley's books I think are a good intro into crime if it hasn't been your thing before. It's not gory but it's involving. I love Lesley's characters because they are so real/human......sart with the first one Murder at Steeple Martin as it's a great read and it sets up the characters so well :-)

Gosh, just look what happens when I get sick and lie in bed all day.

Liz, thanks for the link. Yes Holly is amazing I just can't recommend her enough.

Book cover are sooo important when it comes to selling your book. I think it is so sad that big publishers don't allow authors more input. By my mind, authors, especially new ones, are responsible for much of the promotion of their book: How hard would that be with a really awful cover?

Rebecca so glad you are feeling better. Hope you don't mind I linked you and posted your cover without hearing from you. I just thought the interview was brilliant and important. I also gave the link to one of the writing forums I'm on.
