What a whirlwind two weeks.......and so much to catch up on! First I have been given a wonderful award by the fabulous JJ! What an honour. Thanks JJ. Now I may pass the gift along....... Ray-Anne,Rebecca Burgess, Lisa,Flowerpot,Rachel. I could name a few other but I think they have been awarded already.
London seems like a total blur now and I need to crack the whip and hit my revision, post the latest chapter for the Dickens Challenge (only half written - I confess), and work out some more of the plot for the next book....so the fact that the internet here at present is painfully slow may help to focus back on work.
So before I sign off today......books. I finished Lucie Whitehouse's The House at Midnight on the flight leaving Maldives. Bloody gripping with increasing menace.......great read- nail biter. On my flight yesterday I read Ian McKewn's On Chesil Beach. In many ways it was an easy read and the perfect length. I loved many aspects of it but yet........ glad I read it though.

OOh Liz, I read On Chesil Beach a couple of weeks ago. I thought it was wonderful. So sad.

It is so sad........and I long for happy endings. I found the beginning of the book very powerful but it lost the intensity at the end for me but not the sadness.....

I read On Chesil Beach and then recently, Atonement and I think Ian McEwan is simply brilliant.

Thank you so much for the award! I really appreciate it and I'm looking forward to your next Dickens Challenge installment -- I am working on chapter 9 this week (I should say, staring at a blank page) and feel like I've hit a wall. I need a trip to the Maldives!

Oh Lisa, the desire to write fled when I was in the Maldives - hence the next chapter isn't ready! Handing you the award was a pleasure :-)

A pleasure Ray and Flowerpot. Jet lag isn't too bad as I wasn't in London enough to switch fully. I think I am just plain tired because I crammed so much in to such a short time!

Congrats on winning your excellent blog site award. Well deserved.

What is the Dicken's Challenge?

Welcome Ashley. There's a link on the side bar that explains the Dickens Challenge but basically it is to write a chapter a week by the seat of your pants ala Dickens when he wrote the Mystery of Edmund Drew for the paper. So we don't have to write in his style but spirit. It's a bit of a writing exercise really which reminds me I am a week behind!!!!

Liz, Thanks for the award! I've been a bit distracted (getting ABL ready for the printer) so I've been missing all my favorite blogs (yours included).

On Chesil Beach is on my night stand yet unread. Oh how I miss my pleasure reading time. I look forward to April just so I can resume a somewhat normal schedule.

As an aside, I heard a piece on National Public Radio the other day discussing the severing of several under sea cables that bring internet service to your region. This is perhaps the reason for your current slow service? I think they said it was a ship's anchor.

Hope they fix it soon.

Hi Liz - being a nosey parker I followed a link from Rowan's blog to yours. Fear not you have really no idea who I am! I have to say Ian McEwan hmmmm.

I bought and read On Chesil Beach last year for my book club. We'd read Atonement the year before and I'm afraid that I felt the same way when I finished this one. I hated every one of the characters. He writes beautifully. The stories are great but there is just no warmth in his characters and frankly by the end you don't give a toss about any of them. Or at least I didn't! I don't care what era it was set in - NO-ONE would give up a love like that because of embarrassment. Sorry it just didn't wash with me. I think the same story written by a woman would have been much better.

That's not very pink and fluffy of me is it? I'm trying to be fabulous and positive in all things for my Lenten Promise. I'm going off to hug a tree now!
